Join us on a path of renewed relation with fire. This class dives into the ancient art of friction fire through the prehistoric technology of the Bowdrill. This method of bringing fire is perhaps one of humankind’s earliest simple “machines”. Students will learn how to make a bowdrill fire kit from ideal natural materials, and understand the characteristics that have made them sought after for millennia. Once a functional fire kit is crafted, students learn the crucial details of form and function that the human body brings to the equation. On the side, we focus on fire skills 101, as well as advanced skills such as wet weather, winter, and emergency tricks and tactics for conjuring combustion from the landscape.
