Acquaint yourself with the elemental charm of charcoal as a medium for creative expression! Charcoal has been used as a black pigment for drawing and painting since the Stone Age.
In this workshop you will:
Learn about charcoal’s unique and ancient role in the creative evolution of our species;
Learn how artist charcoal was made historically;
Make a deconstructive still (a “kiln can”) for easy charcoal production;
Process local raw materials and transform them into fine artist charcoal sticks;
Make artist charcoal crayons with beeswax;
Process charcoal into high quality pigments for ink and paint;
Learn about the fascinating and natural characteristics of charcoal and the many ways they can be applied in your life;

Workshops are held in central Vermont, USA, just outside of the lovely town of Montpelier. Winter classes use a heated space for learning and crafting. Bring your own lunch and appropriate winter clothing to be prepared for the outdoor elements of the class. When you secure your place in the workshop, please read the registration information in order to be prepared for your experience!
