Workshop: Pigments, Paints and Natural Paintbrushes, May 17, 2025, 10am - 4pm

In this hands-on workshop you will learn how to make paint and paintbrushes directly from the natural landscape, and go home with your own handmade paint set. As a student you will:

  • Gain new perspective and insight on the colorful history of paint and how it fits in the archaeological record;

  • See a wide variety of handmade paints, paint pots, and paintbrushes;

  • Learn how to find and identify paint stones;

  • Learn how to process rocks into high quality earth pigments

  • Learn the fundamentals of paint binders and experiment with several natural options;

  • Learn how to use some common natural fibers to make paintbrushes;

  • Go home with your own handmade paint set

Workshops are held in central Vermont, USA, just outside of the lovely town of Montpelier. Winter classes use a heated space for learning and crafting. Bring your own lunch and appropriate winter clothing to be prepared for the outdoor elements of the class. When you secure your place in the workshop, please read the registration information in order to be prepared for your experience!
